🚀 Our Story
FollowerTracker.app started in 2023 when our founder got his Instagram account temporarily restricted. The reason? He'd used one of those "see who unfollowed you" apps that everyone talks about. You know the type. They promise the world but then ask for your password. He figured, what's the worst that could happen?
Turns out, quite a lot. The app violated Instagram's terms of service by automating actions on his account. Instagram noticed, flagged his account, and he lost access for three days. Three days of not being able to post, respond to DMs, or engage with his community. For someone running a small business through Instagram, those three days felt like an eternity.
The Problem We Saw
After that experience, we started researching the follower tracking app market. What we found was concerning. Most apps fall into one of two categories:
The first category includes apps that require your Instagram login. These tools use your credentials to scrape data directly from your account. They can see everything: your DMs, your story views, your private followers. And because they're making requests on your behalf, Instagram can (and often does) flag your account for suspicious activity.
The second category includes apps that promise they're "safe" but are actually just doing the same thing through slightly different technical means. Different wrappers, same risks. We talked to dozens of users who'd had their accounts restricted, temporarily banned, or permanently suspended after using these tools.
A Different Approach
We asked ourselves a simple question: is it possible to provide useful follower insights without ever touching someone's Instagram credentials? The answer is yes, but it requires a completely different technical approach.
Our tool only accesses publicly available information. When you enter a username on our site, we're looking at the same data any visitor to that profile could see. We don't log into your account. We don't store your password. We can't, because we never ask for it.
For users who want deeper analytics on their own accounts, our mobile app uses Instagram's official OAuth authentication. This is the same secure login system that Instagram provides for legitimate third-party integrations. Your password goes directly to Instagram, not to us. We only receive a secure token that lets us show you your data.
